Dr. Stone Editorial Reviews

What If Civilization Reset to the Stone Age?

Today, I want to introduce Dr.STONE, a survival science manga about humanity rebuilding civilization from scratch after modern society is wiped out. It’s one of my all-time favorite manga. Have you ever played the video game Civilization? In it, you start in 4000 B.C. and build your nation through the ages, competing to survive and thrive. It’s incredibly exciting to watch the evolution of nations and science—and Dr.STONE captures that exact same thrill in manga form. The protagonist is Senku, a brilliant high school student with an extraordinary talent for science. One day, a mysterious light petrifies all of humanity, turning people into stone. Over 3,700 years pass, and the world falls into ruin. Senku eventually revives, and with nothing left of human civilization, he sets out to rebuild it—using the power of science. As he discovers how to bring people back from their petrified state, Senku gathers an elite team of revived allies to help restore civilization. Watching the rapid progress—from primitive tools to engines, ships, and even mobile phones—is exhilarating. But Dr.STONE isn’t just fun—it’s educational too. The manga explains how to make things like soap or generate electricity, making it a genuinely informative read.

A Cast of Genius Specialists

One of Dr.STONE’s greatest strengths is that it’s not just about Senku. Many characters bring their own “superpowers” to the table. For instance, there’s Taiju, whose limitless stamina makes up for Senku’s physical weakness; Tsukasa, a powerful high schooler with unmatched strength; and Ryusui, a wealthy prodigy with exceptional seafaring skills. All of them are revived from stone and contribute their talents to Senku’s mission of rebuilding civilization. Alongside these “specialists,” Dr.STONE also introduces native villagers (you’ll have to read the manga or watch the anime to find out why they exist, even though all humans were supposedly petrified). Through alliances and conflicts with these characters, the story adds emotional weight and dramatic tension that elevate the narrative beyond just a science experiment. Dr.STONE is a thrilling and inspiring manga about starting over, the power of knowledge, and the unbreakable will to build a better future. Whether you love science, adventure, or smart storytelling—it’s absolutely worth reading.
