Gintama Synopsis

Gintama is a manga series by Hideaki Sorachi, set in an alternate version of the Edo period where humans coexist with extraterrestrial beings known as the "Amanto." After the Amanto invade and rise to power, the samurai class declines, and the shogunate issues a ban on carrying swords. As a result, former samurai lose their pride, and the once-historical city of Edo transforms into a futuristic, chaotic metropolis.

Gintama Editorial Reviews

The Funniest Manga Ever Made

Today, I want to talk about Gintama. Has there ever been a manga that made you laugh this hard? Honestly, I can't think of a series with a sharper sense of humor than Gintama. It's so well-loved that even overseas YouTubers upload clips featuring the funniest moments from the anime. The setting is the "Bakumatsu" period — a historical era in Japan when Western technology and culture began to enter the country. But in Gintama, instead of Western influence, it's alien technology and culture that arrive and transform Edo. The series is packed with parodies of Japanese celebrities and actors, which may resonate more with Japanese audiences. However, it also features spoofs of well-known anime and simple, universal jokes that make it enjoyable for international viewers as well. While Gintama features a compelling main storyline with emotional depth, most of the series is told in an episodic format, making it easy to jump into without stress. With a total of 72 volumes, reading the entire manga might cost quite a bit, so I recommend starting with the anime, which is available on Netflix (watching with subtitles captures more of the humor).

Characters Loved Even After the Series Ended

At the heart of Gintama is the main character Gintoki, joined by the straight-man Shinpachi and the outrageous Kagura. But the series also includes unforgettable characters like the Shinsengumi and Takasugi from the Kiheitai. Each one is unique and continues to be loved by fans long after the series ended. When Gintama voice actors hold live events, venues that seat tens of thousands sell out instantly. In Japan, you can still find Gintama merchandise everywhere, especially in UFO catchers (prize machines). Why are these characters so beloved? Because each of them is distinct and well-developed, with their own compelling backstories and dramatic arcs. That’s what makes Gintama more than just a comedy — it’s a series with heart.
