Hunter × Hunter Editorial Reviews

A Masterpiece from the Genius Yoshihiro Togashi

Even someone like myself, notoriously tough on manga ratings, has no other words to describe Hunter x Hunter than "a manga created by a true genius." A legendary editor of Weekly Shōnen Jump, known for offering critical insights on series like One Piece, notably responded when asked about Hunter x Hunter: "Well, Togashi is simply a genius." No further comment needed. The story revolves around Gon, a young boy who sets off on a journey to become a "Hunter" in order to find his missing father. But honestly, summarizing the plot doesn't do this masterpiece justice. Just dive right into the manga—trust me, you'll find yourself racing through the Hunter Exam, Heaven’s Arena, and Greed Island arcs in no time. Togashi's genius particularly shines in his artful and meticulous foreshadowing. While series like One Piece are praised for clever setups, Togashi elevates foreshadowing into an art form. Clues hidden subtly in character names or manga covers—there’s seemingly no end to his ingenuity. If by chance you haven't read this globally beloved manga yet, don’t wait any longer. And here's a fun fact: Yoshihiro Togashi’s wife is none other than the creator of Sailor Moon. Truly a genius couple!

Will We Ever Witness the Conclusion?

To discuss Hunter x Hunter honestly, we must also address its significant downside: the publication schedule. While One Piece, serialized around the same time, has surpassed 100 volumes, Hunter x Hunter is still lingering at only 38 volumes. Yes, despite being part of "Weekly" Shōnen Jump, Togashi’s manga often vanishes for years at a time before suddenly reappearing with a few chapters. While each chapter is rich, detailed, and meticulously crafted, this irregular publishing rhythm leaves readers stranded for prolonged periods. Additionally, as the pace has slowed, the complexity of each chapter has significantly increased—often requiring multiple readings to fully grasp. But even with these drawbacks, Hunter x Hunter remains an unparalleled manga experience that’s worth every bit of patience it demands.
