Konkatsu Battlefield 37 Synopsis
Yuka Akagi is a 37-year-old temp worker who's always been relatively attractive and never had trouble finding men—but somehow, she's still single. Thinking casually, "Maybe it's time I got married," she dives headfirst into the ruthless battlefield known as modern dating. Yuka tries everything: singles parties, dating apps, matchmaking services—but quickly discovers the path to marriage is tougher than expected. Her high expectations for looks and salary become obstacles, and her tendency to look down on others often backfires spectacularly. After a series of failed attempts, Yuka meets Aoshima, a coworker and veteran of the dating scene with eight years of battle scars. A quirky friendship blooms, alongside encounters with distinctive characters like the earnest yet unassuming Uchida and her former flame, Takashi. Funny, honest, and painfully relatable, Konkatsu Battlefield 37 captures the trials, laughs, and heartbreaks of navigating romance in your late thirties—offering humor, empathy, and encouragement to anyone who's ever braved the front lines of dating.

Konkatsu Battlefield 37 Editorial Reviews
The Side Characters Steal the Show
The greatest charm of Konkatsu Battlefield 37 is undeniably its cast of bizarrely entertaining characters. Besides the hilarious protagonist, Akagi, side characters like Aoshima, Uchida, and Ishiguro each have uniquely twisted views of love that are endlessly amusing. Take Aoshima, a "veteran" of the dating scene with eight grueling years under his belt, currently in a preliminary dating stage ("kari-kousai") with Uchida. He commits an outrageous mistake and sends Uchida an apology message that hilariously resembles an infamous Japanese TV comedy skit from "Gaki no Tsukai," where a character named Heipo "apologizes" without really apologizing. It was so absurd, I genuinely laughed myself breathless. Meanwhile, Ishiguro's disturbingly dark romance with a coworker in volume five borders on horror, showcasing his unhinged desperation brilliantly. Moments like these ensure that every character brings something memorable to the table, consistently keeping readers hooked with humor, cringe, and relatable tragedy. If you're ready for gut-busting laughs (and maybe some existential dread about your dating life), Konkatsu Battlefield 37 is a must-read.

Dating is a Battlefield!
My first laugh of 2025 came courtesy of Konkatsu Battlefield 37. Seriously, this manga had me roaring. If you want to start your year filled with laughter, you definitely need to pick this up. In short, Konkatsu Battlefield 37 is absolutely hilarious. It’s not the kind of manga that thrills you with adventure or action; instead, it delivers pure, unadulterated comedy. The series brilliantly captures the struggles and absurdities of trying to find a partner, combining real-world dating statistics with exaggerated, comedic scenarios. While the concept of "konkatsu" (marriage hunting) might be unfamiliar overseas, readers everywhere can relate to the frantic quest for the "perfect partner" and the comedic disasters that ensue when desperation sets in. One cautionary note: reading this manga as a single person versus as a married person will leave you feeling completely different emotions. Personally, as a single guy, I laughed until my sides hurt—only to finish the book filled with creeping anxiety, thinking, “Oh no… am I destined for a lonely death?” In Japan, people in their late 30s face dramatically tougher hurdles in marriage. With limited "good" options remaining, the quest to marry becomes a ruthless battlefield—each dating encounter feels like a desperate war for dwindling resources.
