SAKAMOTO DAYS Synopsis

SAKAMOTO DAYS is an action-comedy manga featuring Taro Sakamoto, once known and feared in the criminal underworld as a legendary assassin. After falling in love and getting married, Sakamoto retired from his life of crime. Now a happily married, overweight, middle-aged man, he enjoys a peaceful life running the "Sakamoto Store" alongside his beloved family. However, due to his notorious past, Sakamoto has a bounty placed on his head, drawing various assassins who threaten to disrupt his peaceful days. One such assassin is Shin, his former subordinate and an esper with the ability to read minds. Originally ordered to kill Sakamoto, Shin is instead won over by Sakamoto's kindness and strength, ultimately becoming an ally and employee at the Sakamoto Store. Committed to the promise he made to his family—“no more killing”—Sakamoto utilizes his incredible combat skills and sharp intellect to protect his loved ones from the chaos that continuously invades their daily life. Combining stylish battles, comedic situations, and the heartwarming bonds between distinctive characters, SAKAMOTO DAYS delivers a uniquely entertaining story.

SAKAMOTO DAYS Editorial Reviews

Stunning Fight Scenes

Fight scenes in Sakamoto Days are genuinely impressive. True to its assassin theme, characters use weapons like guns and knives, but the manga’s greatest charm lies in creatively using everyday objects—pens, aprons, and other mundane items—as unexpected weapons. This playful creativity clearly shows the author's sense of fun and originality. However, one aspect I find slightly disappointing is the lack of logic behind the supernatural powers. Apart from Shin, it’s never really explained why the other characters possess special abilities, and it feels as if the author hasn’t considered logical reasons behind these powers. In manga such as Hunter x Hunter, abilities are thoroughly explained via Nen, and One Piece features clear logic with its Devil Fruits. This foundation adds depth and strategic complexity to battles, something I personally appreciate greatly. Because Sakamoto Days lacks this element, I have to give it a slightly lower rating in this area.

Classic Shonen Jump Action!

Sakamoto Days is a manga about Taro Sakamoto, once admired by all assassins as an unmatched and legendary figure, who has since retired. After falling instantly in love at a convenience store, Sakamoto left his life as a hitman behind, married his beloved, started a family—and gained weight. Utterly devoted to his wife, Sakamoto abides strictly by the family rule: no killing, to avoid divorce at all costs. Even in retirement, he's continually targeted by assassins and mafia, inevitably pulled back into dangerous situations—that’s the simple premise of Sakamoto Days. Now, let’s dive into the review. First off, if you ask whether the manga is entertaining or not, the answer is unquestionably yes. Had it been published twenty years earlier, it would have easily stood among the most popular manga of its era. Today, however, readers might initially react with, "Oh, I've seen this before." The setting—a legendary assassin living a quiet life—is certainly not new, appearing frequently in other series. Yet, despite this well-worn concept, Sakamoto Days manages to stay fresh thanks to its protagonist, Taro Sakamoto, whose charm is both cool and lovable, paired perfectly with swift and engaging storytelling.
