Zatch Bell! 2

Today’s feature is Zatch Bell!! 2, the long-awaited sequel to the hugely popular Zatch Bell!! series! I absolutely loved Zatch Bell!! as a kid, so when the sequel was announced, I was beyond excited. The story begins about 12 years after the battle to decide the demon king. The demon world, now ruled by Zatch, is suddenly attacked by mysterious non-demon invaders known as the “Vaig.” In the chaos, a young demon named Zelly is entrusted with a piece of paper and told to deliver it to Kiyomaro in the human world. When Zelly finds Kiyomaro and hands him the paper, he deciphers its code, leading to Zatch’s revival. From there, the two set out to restore the demon world—freeing demons whose powers have been sealed, reviving mummified demons, and confronting their mysterious new enemies. Since the series is still ongoing, my impressions are based on the first four volumes currently available. To be honest, I think Zatch Bell!! 2 might be hard to fully enjoy if you haven’t read Zatch Bell!! 1. But for those of us who did read the original, Zatch Bell!! 2 is full of nostalgia and the joy of seeing a beloved story continue. Most of the spells and demons carry over from the first series, and early on you’ll reunite with familiar faces like a grown-up Kanchome and Tio. It feels just like running into your old middle or high school classmates at a reunion. Kanchome, Tio, Brago… I expect that more and more characters from Zatch Bell!! 1 will reappear as the story goes on. The only small disappointment so far is that there haven’t been any brand-new spells or techniques yet, but I’m hoping they’ll appear in future chapters. In my opinion, the story of Zatch Bell!! 2 actually has more depth than the first series, with intriguing new mysteries—why were demons sealed as ruins in the human world, and how was Zatch able to return? These questions give the sequel a richer plot. Since Zatch Bell!! 2 is still in its early stages, I’m looking forward to seeing more nostalgic characters, new allies, and fresh spells. If you haven’t read Zatch Bell!! 1 yet, I strongly recommend starting there to get the most enjoyment out of this sequel.
